Key Words and Definitions:
The following words will appear throughout this module. You will have the opportunity at the beginning of each individual lesson to view the words necessary to understand the information in the section.
| Bloom's Taxonomy: guideline for categorizing questions based on their cognitive level.
Direct instruction: actual teaching or presenting material.
Readability: the ease with which material can be read.
Cooperative learning: small groups working together with guidance from an instructor.
Graphic organizer: visual tool showing how ideas are related to one another.
Core Text:: in GED and pre-GED, books that provide instruction in the various content areas; in ABE, books that provide instruction in the process of reading.
Supplementary Text:: books that offer instructional material in addition to the core text.
Context:: the surrounding words or sentences from which a student can gain meaning.
Life-skills:abilities needed for daily living; focus is on job-related skills.
Easy-reading: high interest, low vocabulary reading that is important for beginning readers; may come from the children's section.
Basic skills: skills which underlie many basic competencies.
Competency: tasks and activities being assessed.
Sub-competency: pre-requisites to enable success with an activity.
